The bitter irony of The Sun Also Rises: Although Brett is more than willing, Jake's sexual attraction can never be satisfied, because he has been castrated in combat during World War I. He wants to love Brett and to be loved by her in turn. Jake's main need, of course, is for Brett. That means that the novel is driven by his needs and desires more than those of the other characters. He is also its protagonist, or main character. Jake Barnes is not merely the narrator (storyteller) of The Sun Also Rises. ![]()
